Two recipes for floral spring scents

After a period of harsh cold, winter now finally seems to come to an end. The time of the birds and the bees is coming! Like everyone, we too look forward to the new season of growth in which the earth will grant us beautiful new plants. All around us, bright yellow crocusses sprout, giving us new energy!
But if nature blossoms, we can’t stay behind! How nice would it be to feel as if you were a flower with a lovely scent? To make that happen, we share two recipes for flowery scent powders!

Our beloved book Dat Batement van Recepten gives us a nice view into which scents are trendy at this moment in the 1530’s. Not all ingrediënts can be found in your average herb collection at home, but gathering them will be worth the trouble.

‘To make nice scented powder’
Take half an ounce of cloves and four ounces of florentine iris. Take half an ounce of fresh marjoram, resin of the stryrax tree and mint. Add 60 grams of the spice saw-sedge, 120 grams of lavender, 10 grams of musk, 6 grams of civet oil and 2 grams of laudanum. Mix all the ingredients together for a powder with a wonderfull scent!

‘Another well scented powder’
First you will need to gather juniper berries, half a pound and five ounces. On top of that, you will need to have two and a half pounds red roses, a quarter of a pound resin and clove. Lastly, you’ll need half a pound and five ounces of florentine iris, a quarter of a pound of coriander and the spice saw-sedge. Grind it all together for a good powder.

Apply the powders to the areas which you think need it most! In your headdress, armpits.. whatever you like! You will smell like fresh irisses. Have a good spring season!
